Every time I visit my four-year-old niece, I face the
same "cool aunt" dilemma: what do I bring her? I’m always on the
lookout for gifts that are more than just plastic toys that will be forgotten
in a week. I want something that sparks her curiosity, something we can do
together, and—if I’m being honest—something that gives her parents a bit of a
break!
On my last visit, I decided to try something a little
different. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of raising bilingual kids,
but most of the "educational" books I found felt like, well...
school. Then I stumbled upon a series by author Sophie Redmond called Learn
Spanish with Stories.
I was intrigued by her "Spiral Learning
Method," so I grabbed the set for my niece. The result? She was obsessed
with the illustrations, her parents were thrilled with how easy it was, and I
officially won the "Best Gift" award for the month.
Why
"Spiral Learning" is a Game-Changer
Before I dive into the books themselves, I have to
tell you about the method behind them. I did a little digging into what
"Spiral Learning" actually means because it sounded so different from
how I learned languages in school.
Instead of teaching a child a long list of words to
memorize (which we all know leads to boredom and "I don't want to!"),
this method introduces one small concept at a time. That concept then
"spirals" back again and again throughout different stories in a natural,
meaningful way.
It’s exactly how we learn our first language. We don’t
use flashcards with babies; we just talk to them, and they pick up patterns.
These books do the same thing. There are no drills, no tests, and—blessedly—no
homework.
A Look Inside
the Series
I started my niece off with three specific books from
the series, and they’ve become her absolute favorites:
1. Learn
Spanish with Stories — Colors
This was the big hit. It features nine beautifully
illustrated stories. Each story focuses on a color, but the "spiral"
part is where the magic happens. A color introduced in Story 1 will pop up
again in Story 4 and Story 9. By the time we finished the book, my niece was
pointing at her red apple and shouting "Rojo!" without me even
asking her to translate.
2. Learn
Spanish with Stories — Numbers
Counting can be repetitive, but this book turns it
into a narrative journey. It’s designed for the 4–7 age range, so the pacing is
perfect. It’s calm, consistent, and doesn't overwhelm their attention spans.
3. Learn
Spanish with Stories — Directions & Positions
This is such a clever addition to the series. It
teaches concepts like "up and down" or "left and right."
For a four-year-old who is still mastering these concepts in English, seeing
them in Spanish at the same time is like a double workout for the brain—but one
that feels like playtime.
The Parent's
Perspective: Zero Prep, Zero Stress
As much as my niece loved the stories, my sister (her
mom) might have loved them even more. As a busy parent, the last thing she
needs is a "lesson" she has to prepare.
The beauty of Sophie Redmond’s books is that you
don't need to know a word of Spanish to read them to your child. The
stories are designed to do the heavy lifting for you. You just sit down, enjoy
the reading time, and let the spiral method work its magic in the background.
Plus, as a lifestyle blogger who values "slow
living" and screen-free time, I love that these books encourage focused,
quiet connection. There’s even a "Parent & Caregiver" section in the
back with simple, screen-free games and coloring pages to keep the fun going
after the story ends.
My Final
Thoughts
If you have a niece, nephew, or your own little ones
at home, I can’t recommend this series enough. It has turned
"learning" into the highlight of our bedtime routine. It’s gentle,
professional, and—most importantly—it actually works.
Sophie Redmond has a whole range of these
"home-learning" books, and honestly, they are a must-have for any
modern playroom.
