I have a friend who separated from her husband after
seven years of marriage. When I told her I'd been talking to astrologer Rowena
Winslow about synastry — the comparison of two people's birth charts — she
laughed.
"If someone had shown me that chart in year
two," she said, "I wouldn't have believed them."
Rowena Winslow didn't find this surprising at all.
"That's the most common thing I hear," she
says. "Not 'the chart was wrong.' But 'I couldn't have heard it then.'
People come to synastry after the relationship has already done its damage.
They want confirmation of what they already know. What they rarely want — at
the beginning, when it would actually help — is accurate information about what
they're walking into."
Her two-volume Astrology Made Easy: Relationship Astrology series is the most rigorous treatment of synastry I've encountered in English. It is also, in places, genuinely uncomfortable reading.
